They represent a great part of the historical heritage of the city and are to be compared to the most developed literary funds of the far bigger and older European cities.<\/strong><br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span>Brothers <strong>M. Popovi\u0107 &#8211; Kirilo \u0106ira Popovi\u0107<\/strong> (1839-1912) and <strong>\u0110or\u0111e \u0110oka Popovi\u0107<\/strong> (1846-1907), <strong>Luka Joci\u0107<\/strong> (1839-1926), <strong>Arsa Pajevi\u0107<\/strong> (1841-1905) and <strong>Svetozar Ognjanovi\u0107<\/strong> (1869-1927) gifted us with an incredible amount of works.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Many significant bookstores and publishing companies recorded enormous results that are hard to imagine even today, despite the modern technology and modern production, as well as the higher cultural and educational level of the readers nowadays. In the period from 1875 to 1905, the Popovi\u0107 brothers\u2019 bookstore published 950 printed works in over 3 million copies, with the capital of over 200.000 forints.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u2018Their books will be distributed from Tsargrad to New York.\u2019 It was the biggest bookstore not just among Serbs in Vojvodina, but in general.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In 1907, the bookstore stated: We remind our brothers and sisters from abroad, those living in America, Asia and Australia, that their needs will be most accurately met when the ordered books are paid in advance, either through the post office or some other way. When we get the money, we will do the work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>That\u2019s how the greatest Serbian bookstore in the world advertised and promoted itself.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span>Platon\u2019s Printing House<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span><strong>Arsa Pajevi\u0107<\/strong> took over <strong>Jovan Suboti\u0107<\/strong>\u2019s former <em>Platon\u2019s Printing House<\/em> in <a href=\"https:\/\/visitdistrikt.rs\/en\/2020\/11\/27\/the-oldest-alley-of-novi-sad-a-walk-through-the-centuries-of-dunavska-street\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dunavska Street<\/a> in the 19th century. Thus, Arsa owned both the bookstore and the printing house. He sold the printing house to <strong>\u0110or\u0111e Ivkovi\u0107<\/strong> in 1895. Back in 1848, <strong>Danilo Medakovi\u0107<\/strong> founded Ivkovi\u0107\u2019s printing house, i.e. Platon \u2013 Suboti\u0107 \u2013 Pajevi\u0107\u2019s printing house. Arsa Pajevi\u0107 and his wife <strong>Anka<\/strong> are remembered as great benefactors of the Serbian people. They donated around 200,000 crowns to the Serbian Grammar School, around 16,000 crowns to the Serbian School for Girls in Novi Sad, and were one of the founders of the <em>Srpkinja Novosatkinja<\/em> cooperative. They helped the poor and the hungry in Kosovo and schooled a couple of Serbian men\u2026 Among the many prizes and acknowledgements, they were awarded two state orders from the <strong>ruler Nikola<\/strong> and <strong>king Aleksandar<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Pajevi\u0107 printed almost all of Zmaj\u2019s magazines: <em>Starmali<\/em> (1878-1889), <em>Neven<\/em> (1880-1889), <em>Javor<\/em> (1889-1891) and was their patron. In addition to this, he printed a large number of other magazines and publications: <em>Branik<\/em> (1885-1914), <em>Srpski Sion<\/em> (1891), <em>Istorija Novog Sada<\/em> (1894) and so on. He also did literary work. <strong>Branislav Nu\u0161i\u0107<\/strong>, the greatest Serbian commediograph, lived in the house of Arsa Pajevi\u0107 during the period of managing the <a href=\"https:\/\/visitdistrikt.rs\/en\/2020\/11\/20\/six-fascinating-stories-from-the-history-of-the-serbian-national-theatre\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Serbian National Theatre<\/a>. Pajevi\u0107\u2019s house was the meeting place for writers, as well as cultural and public employees. After the First World War, it became home to the Serbian Reading Room. Arsa Pajevi\u0107 died in 1905 and <strong>Svetozar Ognjanovi\u0107<\/strong> took over his remarkable bookstore a year later. Ognjanovi\u0107\u2019s rich bookstore was robbed by Hungarians in 1914, burning certain collections worth 80,000 crowns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7657 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/visitdistrikt.rs\/media\/2021\/03\/stamparije-novi-sad.png\" alt=\"stara fotografija novog sada dunavska ulica \u0161tamparija arse pajevi\u0107a\" width=\"1338\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/visitdistrikt.rs\/media\/2021\/03\/stamparije-novi-sad.png 1338w, https:\/\/visitdistrikt.rs\/media\/2021\/03\/stamparije-novi-sad-300x179.png 300w, https:\/\/visitdistrikt.rs\/media\/2021\/03\/stamparije-novi-sad-1024x612.png 1024w, https:\/\/visitdistrikt.rs\/media\/2021\/03\/stamparije-novi-sad-768x459.png 768w, https:\/\/visitdistrikt.rs\/media\/2021\/03\/stamparije-novi-sad-1320x789.png 1320w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1338px) 100vw, 1338px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span>Fuks\u2019 Printing House<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Ignjat Fuks\u2019 printing house earned the epithet of the oldest printing house in Serbia. <strong>Jovan Kaulici<\/strong>, the famous bookstore owner, opened it in 1843. Fuksa\u2019s printing house wasn\u2019t marked nationally nor politically. However, it was thought of as a German bookstore because the owner was German and because a German weekly was being published there. In Fuks\u2019 printing house, many Serbian magazines and newspapers were printed, such as <em>Danica, Komarac, Seljak, Domi\u0161ljan, Putnik, Nedeljni list<\/em>, and <em>Javor<\/em>, for a period of time.<\/p>\n<p><span>In the <em>Zastava<\/em> newspaper, in April 1880, there was news about <strong>Luka Joci\u0107<\/strong> and <strong>a<\/strong> opening their own bookstore in 16 Dunavska Street. Joci\u0107 and Ivkovi\u0107 were given permission to print and sell literary and school books, as well as paintings and school supplies. In 1888, \u0110or\u0111e separated from his business partner in order to open his own printing house and a bookstore. Meanwhile, Luka Joci\u0107 slowly started to sell out his bookstore. He completely closed it down at the beginning of the 20th century.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><em>Zastava, Ve\u010dernja\u010da, Zavi\u010daj, Hedeljne novine, Radikalna re\u010d, \u017dena<\/em> and other newspapers and magazines were printed in the Serbian printing house of <strong>Svetozar Mileti\u0107<\/strong>. Before the First World War, Novi Sad had 14 printing houses.
