In the year when Novi Sad bears the <a href=\"https:\/\/novisad2022.rs\/en\/home-3\/\">European Capital of Culture<\/a> title, festival activities will take place at more than 30 locations across the city, Youth Theatre, cultural stations, parks, schools and kindergartens, children\u2019s playgrounds, urban green spaces, premises of the City Library in Novi Sad, the Museum of Vojvodina therefore making it more accessible to children and interested audience in the whole City.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We bring an interesting story about the creation and development of Zmaj Children Games, a festival with long tradition that children have been looking forward to for 65 years.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-35334\" src=\"https:\/\/visitdistrikt.rs\/media\/2022\/06\/013-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"599\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/visitdistrikt.rs\/media\/2022\/06\/013-1.jpg 599w, https:\/\/visitdistrikt.rs\/media\/2022\/06\/013-1-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 599px) 100vw, 599px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Zmaj Jovina Street \u2013 A Place Where Children Gather<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Jovan Jovanovi\u0107 Zmaj<\/strong> was born in Novi Sad in 1833. He was a Serbian poet, playwright, translator and doctor. He was also the editor of numerous magazines for children and adults. He was an associate of prominent Serbian politicians in the second half of the 19th century. He was the first writer in Serbian literature to create poetry for children. One of the main streets in the Novi Sad centre, where the children\u2019s festival takes place, was named after the poet. The street used to be called the Main Street, and it runs from the Liberty Square to the <strong>Bishop\u2019s Palace<\/strong>, where it intersects with <strong>Dunavska Street<\/strong>, one of the oldest in Novi Sad. The space in front of the Bishop\u2019s Palace is adorned with the<strong> statue of Jovan Jovanovi\u0107 Zmaj<\/strong>, one of the places where children gather and where part of the <strong>Zmaj Children Games<\/strong> programme takes place every year in June.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-35253 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/visitdistrikt.rs\/media\/2022\/06\/V.VelickovicSeptember23.029-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/visitdistrikt.rs\/media\/2022\/06\/V.VelickovicSeptember23.029-1.jpg 800w, https:\/\/visitdistrikt.rs\/media\/2022\/06\/V.VelickovicSeptember23.029-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/visitdistrikt.rs\/media\/2022\/06\/V.VelickovicSeptember23.029-1-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>This Is How Zmaj Children Games Were Created<\/h2>\n<p>Back in 1954, on the occasion of the opening of the restored Jovan Jovanovi\u0107 Zmaj Museum in Sremska Kamenica, proposals for organising the event <strong>Zmaj\u2019s Days<\/strong> that would be held annually between 1 and 20 June were made. That is how <strong>Zmaj\u2019s Days<\/strong> began in Sremska Kamenica in 1958 with the presentation on Children\u2019s Poetry by <em>Jovan Jovanovic Zmaj given by academic<\/em> <strong>Veljko Petrovi\u0107<\/strong> and poetic expression by <strong>Desanka Maksimovi\u0107<\/strong>,<strong> Stevan Rai\u010dkovi\u0107<\/strong>,<strong> Du\u0161an Radovi\u0107<\/strong>, <strong>Bo\u017eidar Kova\u010devi\u0107<\/strong> and <strong>Gvido Tartalja<\/strong>. That is when the foundations of one of the oldest festivals of artistic creation for children were laid. In 1969, the name of the festival was changed to Zmaj Children Games, and it has remained the same until the present day.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-35246 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/visitdistrikt.rs\/media\/2022\/06\/thumbnail_016.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"598\" srcset=\"https:\/\/visitdistrikt.rs\/media\/2022\/06\/thumbnail_016.jpg 800w, https:\/\/visitdistrikt.rs\/media\/2022\/06\/thumbnail_016-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/visitdistrikt.rs\/media\/2022\/06\/thumbnail_016-768x574.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The organiser\u2019s main idea, from the very beginning, was to gather writers, illustrators, critics, publishers, editors, librarians, pedagogues, artists, and readers of children\u2019s literature. The <strong>Zmaj Children Games<\/strong> have their own publishing in the form of the magazine \u2018<strong>Detinjstvo<\/strong>\u2019 (Childhood), while the first issue was published in 1975. Since 2015, it has been on the list of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development of the Republic of Serbia, as an art-scientific magazine. Rich publishing activities consist of editions of contemporary local and European literature, critical reviews, theoretical books on children\u2019s literature, world folk literature, etc. <strong>Zmaj Children Games<\/strong>, being the International Centre for Children\u2019s Literature, implements various projects throughout the year. In addition to the June festival, there are the<strong> December Zmaj\u2019s Days of Beautiful Words<\/strong>, a festival of monodrama for children, guest appearances of artists in other cities, multilingual programmes in multinational environments, programmes for children belonging to vulnerable and marginalized groups.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Zmaj Children Games<\/strong> manifestation, within which children, their mentors and families participate every year, while the audience enjoys, includes multimedia programmes for children and youth that features all forms of artistic expression for children, as well as children\u2019s creativity (theatre, literature, music, art, film screenings, workshops, exhibitions and, above all, meetings of writers and readers).
