The District in Novi Sad, a proud member of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network, will host a multimedia exhibition titled The Position of Identity in Contemporary Reality. The exhibition will open on 29 November at 7 p.m. at SCCNS Fabrika and will remain available for viewing throughout the following day, 30 November. Visitors will also have the opportunity to attend an accompanying programme, including a panel discussion, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
This unique artistic installation, blending holograms, video projections, performances, and photography, delves into contemporary identity within the context of the digital sphere, cultural mythologies, and human perception.
The Position of Identity in Contemporary Reality was selected through the first public call for co-financing projects that contribute to cultural development in line with Novi Sad’s membership in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network. The exhibition’s creators are artists Tijana Jevrić and László Gálos (from Budapest), in collaboration with Miloš Fath. The exhibition is curated by art historian Ksenija Marinković.
The opening at SCCNS Fabrika will take place on Friday, 29 November, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., followed by a DJ performance by DJ Vetas. On Saturday, 30 November, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the exhibition space will host the accompanying programme.
Exploring Identity in Contemporary Reality
This multimedia and interdisciplinary exhibition, along with its accompanying programme, combines analog photography, performance, artificial intelligence, video projection, and holograms to spark a discourse on the state of identity in contemporary reality. It examines themes ranging from cultural mythologies on social media to the human body, its sensations, and beliefs. The project seeks to present the culmination of humanity’s relationship with self-identity and the ways identity is manipulated through social norms, hidden desires, and collected digital data (’digital footprint’). These dynamics further amplify alienation from what makes us individuals.
Narratives, a central part of human experience, are today often wielded as weapons against individual truth. Through subversion, the project transforms them into channels for communicating its artistic message.
The programme includes discussions with the artists Tijana Jevrić, Miloš Fath, and László Gálos, as well as a panel on identity manipulation in the digital sphere. The panel will be moderated by Vladan Joler, founder of the SHARE Foundation, visual artist, researcher, and professor at the Department of New Media at the Academy of Arts in Novi Sad, and Živa Stanojević, director and expert associate at the Department of Audiovisual Media within the Animation and Visual Effects programme at the same academy. Through the lens of historical context, philosophy, and practice, the programme will explore relationship between humanity and technology, tools for identity manipulation, and unconscious patterns prevalent in society today.
