Why is Suburbium the Epicentre of Doček?

22 December 2021

The architectural baroque jewel of Novi Sad will become a town of light and energy on New Year’s Eve, and we invite you to a unique adventure in which you will see what it looks like when the sky and the earth shine in honour of the great scientist, Nikola Tesla. The Suburbium will be the epicentre of art, light energy and good time on 31 December!

In a combination of different types of art, in the synergy of visual and performing masters of the contemporary local and European cultural scene, Suburbium of the Petrovaradin Fortress, which was built during the 17th and 18th century and renovated after 300 years, is becoming a town of light and energy. Shining with new splendour in the New Year, the Suburbium will be our lighthouse of culture on the Danube, inviting many European artists and visitors to the European Capital of Culture. We will connect the renewed architecture of Suburbium with new technology, all thanks to the great scientist and the first honorary citizen of Novi Sad, Nikola Tesla, who brought electricity to Novi Sad exactly 130 years ago, soon after Paris, London and other major European cities.

The same year, 1892, when Novi Sad was illuminated by his achievements, Tesla passed through Novi Sad and Suburbium by train, which took him from Budapest to the capital of Serbia. In honour of that jubilee, the path he took, all participants of Doček will have a chance, following our great, to participate in an interactive show Tesla, Inventartist at the Varadin Bridge (31 December at 8:22 p.m.) and the hitherto unseen audio-visual light exhibition Tesla Light Gallery in renewed Suburbium. The character and work of Nikola Tesla, Prometheus of the modern age, will be the spark with which we need to illuminate the Suburbium again. The place where Novi Sad originated.

What does Suburbium offer on New Year’s Eve?

Doček in Suburbium is artistic celebration not to be missed, because after the play Tesla, Inventartist, you will have a chance to reach Suburbium in a procession, which will symbolically ‘build’ a bridge over the Danube, where a unique audio-visual experience awaits you! There we continue the story of Tesla ‘written’ on the façades, through Beogradska Street, all the way to the Belgrade Gate, built in 1753. The sky above Suburbium will be illuminated by a directed light spectacle. Some of the most significant European artists in the field of visual installations such as Petko Tančev, Alberto Novello and Ivan Marušić Klif, as well as current names of the European and local music scene, will turn Suburbium into a great energy flash on the Danube on 31 December and 1 January.
