Explore the history of Novi Sad and significant events that influenced its development from the first settlers to today’s tourist, cultural and university centre and the city that bore the European Capital of Culture title.

City Centre

The Novi Sad centre experienced rapid development in the second half of the 19th century, after the bombing of the city by which the Hungarian authorities tried to repress the struggle for independence.

The statue of Svetozar Miletić, which adorns the very heart of Novi Sad – Trg Slobode (Liberty Square), is one of the symbols of the city today, since this politician was a symbol of rebirth and rise in this period.
Although in many ways a typical Central European city of medium size, even then Novi Sad was characterized by numerous features that it brought from earlier periods of its development, primarily multiculturalism, which was reflected in architecture, art and folk customs.
