Musical Overture for the Kaleidoscope of Culture

The four days of the opening of the Kaleidoscope of Culture from 1 to 4 September in the area of the renovated District, one of the most important infrastructure projects on the former Great Liman, will be marked by a variety of genre-diverse musical events. It is these performances that will be a kind of kaleidoscope of culture in miniature, more precisely the prelude to five weeks of art that will promote the culture of togetherness.

Novi Sad has long been established as a city of culture and a city of music, and now, in the light of the title of European Capital of Culture, it gathers many great artists, and after exciting programme arches from the beginning of 2022, we are followed by the Kaleidoscope of Culture, the best European trend brand, organised for the fifth time. Let’s start September in a musical way, in the District, a former industrial Novi Sad quarter on Liman, now synonymous with a new area of culture and events in the city. We present to you a rich music programme and performances by top performers that should not be missed. Here are the musical names coming to the European Capital of Culture, to jointly open the #5 Kaleidoscope of culture.

#1 Opening Day

The first evening of the opening of the Kaleidoscope of Culture will feature several concerts, first of all the performance of the young Novi Sad DJ Filip Grujić, who will heat up the atmosphere in the District from 7 p.m. His set was noticed at the Exit festival in 2018, and surely you too will be happy to dance to the disco music of the 80s and the RnB sound in the kaleidoscope city.

And since the European Capital of Culture contributed to the French Institute getting its new premises in the new cultural quarter by renewing the District, we will have a unique opportunity to enjoy a concert of French music by the band KLO klo, also starting at 7 p.m., as part of the opening of the exhibition of French contemporary painters. This band consists of five musical virtuosos from Novi Sad, Vanja Manić-Matić – vocals, Lazar Novkov – harmonica, Predrag Đurić – acoustic guitar, Ervin Malina – double bass and Ištvan Čik – percussions, who will use this opportunity to entertain us in the French way and share their love for music through diverse genre performance.

On the same evening at 9 p.m., on music stage 2 in the District, the Novi Sad audience will be entertained by the Vladimir Samardžić Trio and drummer Vladimir Kostadinović. Vladimir Samardžić is one of the most influential bassists in Serbia and in the area of the former Yugoslavia, who collaborates with a large number of soloist orchestras in Serbia and the region, as well as with world-renowned jazz and world music names, including Bojan Zulfikarpašić and Vasil Hadžimanov, in whose joint performance we are also enjoyed in the District this summer. By performing at the opening of the Kaleidoscope of Culture, Vladimir Samardžić, Marco Antonio da Costa, Andreja Krstić, and Vladimir Konstandinović will give the Novi Sad audience an evening to remember with the presentation of the new album Catching the Wind. Do not miss it!

A od 22 časa na muzičkoj sceni 1, Evropska prestonica kulture ugostiće legendarnog kompozitora i izvođača Borisa Kovača na koncertu njegovog najnovijeg projekta New Ritual Quartet. The music scene in the District will be shaken up on the first evening by the Belgrade band VROOM, which will perform at 11 p.m. The band, which has five albums and numerous awards behind it, as well as more than 150 performances held in as many as 13 countries, will present itself to the Novi Sad audience on this occasion. VROOM is recognisable for composing music for theatre performances, in which they sometimes play live, and now they are coming to the European Capital of Culture to enhance and close the first night of the Kaleidoscope of Culture with their performance.

VROOM

The former Quarter in the District is now the Proizvodnja facility, which will also host numerous performers as part of the Kaleidoscope of Culture opening. Showcase is a music programme that will be held simultaneously these four days, and on the first evening, we invite you to watch the performances of the bands Turbo Trans Turisti at 8 p.m., 21. vek at 9 p.m. and Zauvar at 10 p.m. Read more information about the bands here.

#2 Opening Day

Concerts of contemporary percussion art music in our region are a real rarity and draw great interest and enthusiasm from the audience. One of such performances, on the second night of the opening of the Kaleidoscope of Culture, will be a concert by Darko Karlečik on 2 September at 8.30 p.m. in the District. Let’s get to know The New Face of Percussion at a concert where melodic and rhythmic instruments of the percussion family will be presented, with an emphasis on the Marimba. The young artist Darko Karlečik is an accomplished percussionist and senior associate at the Academy of Arts in Novi Sad, who enriched his career with joint performances with ensembles such as Camerata Academica, the Vojvodina Symphony Orchestra, and others.

On the same evening, a fusion of jazz and Balkan rhythms awaits us at the concert performance of the renowned Novi Sad band Dragon’s Fuel, which will perform at 9.30 p.m. as part of the opening. And after this fusion of genres, we take you to a mix of house, disco, techno, and nu-disco music. On the main stage in the District, on the second night of the opening, we will listen to the band Hercules and Love Affair, a musical project of the American DJ, singer, composer and producer Andy Butler, which will perform for the Novi Sad audience from 11.30 p.m. The band, which is celebrating its coming of age this year, has five albums behind it, and we will have the opportunity to hear the tracks from the last one, In Amber, released this year, live for the first time in the European Capital of Culture.

Hercules and Love Affair

The Finnish quartet Apocalyptica will perform on 2 September at 10 p.m. in the District, and we also highly recommend this concert. This band was founded in 1993 and achieved popularity with a unique combination of heavy metal and classics and gave birth to the cello metal music genre, and already has several great albums under its belt, the songs from which will be played in the European Capital of Culture.

DJ Zekiri from Novi Sad will also perform on the second night of the opening, on music stage 2 from 11 p.m., and the representative of the Parisian underground scene, producer DJ Traumer, will go on stage at midnight. His hypnotising minimal house sound will transform the District and we’ll be listening to it after midnight. In his music, you can hear percussion from India, strings and brass instruments from the Middle East, and deep pan-African rhythms combined with a rich history of house and techno from Europe and America. This leader of the French electronic scene is known to the public for his harder sound, while in his opus you can find everything from minimal and microhouse to melodic deep house rhythms.

DJ Traumer

Showcase 2 will also mark the second evening of the music programme in Proizvodnja (former Quarter), and we are expecting the performances of the bands Yugo bleja (warm-up) from 9 to 9.30 p.m., Nataleé from 9.30 to 10.10 p.m., Manivi from 10.20 to 11 p.m., Retrospektiva and A.N.D.R. from 11.10 to 11.50 p.m. and SevdahBABY from 12 to 1 a.m

#3 Opening Day

On the third evening of the Kaleidoscope of culture, we start at 10 p.m. on the main stage with a concert by the English alternative rock band Republica, which gained its popularity during the 90s, and their most prominent hit is Ready to Go. They have been on stage for almost 30 years, and now they are coming to Novi Sad to play for the local audience. At the same time, on the second stage in the District, you can expect a performance by the Croatian synth-pop trio Pocket Palma, consisting of the increasingly popular Luka Vidović, Anja Papa, and Bruno Žabek. Whether they sing in English, as they did on their first two albums that started their career, or in Croatian, on which they released two more albums including the latest Atomi, these young guys have undoubtedly established their musical path, and we look forward to hearing them live in the Capital of Culture. Fans of the Swedish duo Carbon Based Lifeforms will listen to psytrance in Limanski Park from 10 p.m., also as part of the opening of the Kaleidoscope of Culture. Along with CBL, the famous local DJ Brka will perform on the third night of the opening from 7 to 9.45 p.m., followed by Burnstone Fireshow from 9.45 to 10 p.m., and Tappan from midnight.

Pocket Palma

As early as 11 p.m. on the same evening, we will experience a genre twist by listening to Tidal Pull, of the big indie genre. This Croatian band ‘sings in Croatian and plays in English’, and the songs from the debut album, Uvod u promatranje cvijeća pri punoj brzini, released in June of this year, will be heard live for the first time in the European Capital of Culture. On the second stage in the District, also at 11 p.m., the band Short Reports will perform as part of the opening of the Kaleidoscope of Culture. A relatively young band, consisting of guitarist Nikoleta Feher and drummer Nemanja Velimirović, will introduce us to the songs of this rock duo, which talk about some universal topics that few people like to talk about. We will also listen to hits from their album Cats VS Dogs, which they released in November last year, and it is interesting that it was Short Reports who represented Novi Sad as the European Capital of Culture with their performance at the Remix Festival in the Luxembourg city of Esch, which is also the ECoC this year.

Short Reports

We expect a burst of good energy in Proizvodnja (formerly Quarter), where Jana Vuković will perform as part of the Showcase 3 music programme at 9 p.m., Iva Lorens at 10 p.m., Galatheia & Ata at 11 p.m. and Tam at 12 p.m. We recommend it

#4 Opening Day

Kaleidoscope of Culture is also opened by several musical names on the fourth evening, and on the last day, among other things, stage 1 is reserved for the performance of LP Duo. On this occasion, we will have a unique opportunity to listen to original author’s compositions created within the artistic and scientific project Beyond Quantum Music, which this duo will perform on innovative instruments – Duality hybrid pianos. Intrigued? Don’t miss the Kaleidoscope of Culture and the concert by the duo Sonja and Andrija, whose performance will symbolically start at 8:22 p.m. in the District on the music stage 1. Find out what quantum computers, the movement of atoms, and genetic code sound like under the guise of an already recognisable musical language.

LP Duo

On the music stage 2, on the same evening, DJ Killo Killo, Vojislav Malešev from Novi Sad, who is also a singer in the SNP opera choir, will perform at 8 p.m. He founded the band Killo Killo in 2007, a troupe that successfully accompanies him with rhythms with a high-energy fusion of funk, reggae and dancehall vibes.

Četvrti dan otvaranja na sceni 2 obeležiće i nastupi Electro Matine od 15 časova, zatim DJ Vukašin Vojvodić od 18 časova, Prisoners of Surprise u 21 čas, kao i Fusion Jazz od 22h.

The fourth day of the opening on stage 2 will also be marked by the performances of Electro Matine at 3 p.m., DJ Vukašin Vojvodić at 6 p.m., Prisoners of Surprise at 9 p.m., as well as Fusion Jazz at 10 p.m.
